general officer Gustav von Steinhardt was in command of Württemberg's
Landwehr Inspectorate prior to the outbreak of the Great War. As
Germany mobilized in August 1914, Steinhardt was given of the 51st mixed
Ersatz-Infantry-Brigade. Pushing into the Lorraine sector of France, Steinhardt
and his troops saw action during the fall of 1914 in towns such as Lidrezing,
Nancy, and Croix de Carmes. He became deathly ill in November 1914, however, and
had to return to Tübingen for convalescent leave. Unable to return to command,
Generalleutnant von Steinhardt passed away in November 1915.
