Royal Prussian staff officer Detlof Graf von Schwerin served during the Great War as chief of staff at the army corps and group level. For the most part, he functioned as General Friedrich von Scholtz's right-hand man
. Following the hostilities, Graf von Schwerin was dispatched to Doorn, Netherlands, where he worked as the exiled Kaiser Wilhelm's private secretary and Hofmarschall (marshal of the court).
