Egon was the first cousin of General Eberhard von Schmettow. Began the
Great War on the Western Front as a cavalry division commander with the
Crown Prince's Fifth Army. He later commanded HKK-5, which was reformed
in late 1916 into Generalkommando 58. For the final few months of the
Great War, Graf von Schmettow served in Koblenz, Germany as VIII. Army
Corps Commander General Roderich von Schoeler's Deputy. He retired at
the end of the War at the rank of Generalleutnant, but was later
awarded the brevet rank of General der Kavallerie (charakter)
on 27 August 1939 for Tannenberg Remembrance Day.
