General Paul von Schaefer was a Royal Wurttemberg general officer in command of the 54th Reserve Division from September 1914 until January 1916. Troops under his command were engaged in the First Battle of Ypres in October. His infantry division saw further action during the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915. In early 1917, General von Schaefer returned to XIII. Army Corps Headquarters in Stuttgart to serve as Theodor Freiherr von Watter's Acting Commanding General.
