German General of Infantry von Plüskow was in command of XI. Army Corps as World War One got underway. His troops were initially subordinate General von Hausen's Third Army but were soon detached to the contingent besieging the Fortress Namur. At the end of August 1914, XI. Army Corps was transferred to the Hindenburg's Eighth Army on the Eastern Front. Plüskow was known as der lange Otto due to his being 6'8" tall (2.08m), reportedly the tallest general in the German Army.
