Karl Ferdinand Freiherr von Lindeman
(17.12.1856 - 08.12.1915)
place of birth:  Dresden, Sachsen  (Saxony)
Königreich Sachsen:  Generalstabschef,  Div-Kdr,  General der Kavallerie ch.

Saxon cavalry officer Karl Freiherr von Lindeman served as Saxon Army's Chief of General Staff during peacetime. Thereafter, he was selected to head up the 23rd Infantry Division (1. Königlich Sächsische) headquartered in Dresden. At mobilization, von Lindeman continued as 23rd ID commander until being relieved of duty in the summer of 1915, probably due to poor health. As part of Imperial Germany's Third Army, his division pushed through Belgium and northern France and were engaged in the Battle of the Marne. For his exemplary leadership during the early part of that campaign, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. At his discharge, he received the honorary brevet rank of General der Infanterie. Freiherr von Lindeman died a few months later in his hometown of Dresden.
