Saxon general officer Alexander von Larisch was born into the
family of an ancient noble house from Upper Silesia. During peacetime, he
commanded the 32nd Division in Dresden until retiring from active duty in 1913.
As Germany mobilized for World War One, General von Larisch was recalled to
active duty in order to command the 23rd Reserve Infantry Division on the
Western Front. For his exemplary leadership during
the early part of that campaign, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz
(Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the
Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. Due to health reasons, von Larisch had to resign
from active duty in January 1915, after which he was promoted to the brevet rank
of General der Artillerie.
