4th Infantry Division during the pre-War years, retiring from
active
duty in 1906. Von Held had participated in the Franco-Prussian
War
of 1870 at the outset of his military career.
After the Great War got under way, General von
Held was recalled to
active service as Governor of the Cologne Fortress. In September
1915
he moved to the Eastern Front to head up the Imperial General
Government of Grodno, Russia (modern-day Belarus. Remaining in
this
office for the next two years, von Held was appointed 1917 to
command
Generalkommando zbV Nr. 66, also engaged near Grodno.
