German General der Infanterie Ritter Hentschel von Gilgenheimb came out of retirement during the Great War to function as General von Deimling's Acting Commander at XV. Army Corps headquarters in Straßburg. Gilgenheimb entered Prussian military service in time to participate in the Second Schleswig War of 1864. He was combatant in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, where he was engaged at Skalitz and Königgrätz. Four years later, he was again at the front during the Franco-Prussian War or 1870-71, seeing action at Pfalzburg and during the Siege of Paris. During peacetime, Gilgenheimb commanded the 3rd Division at Stettin and XV. Army Corps headquartered in Straßburg. Gilgenheimb was married to the former Maria Willert. Their son Max was also an army officer, and their two sons Alfred and Kurt were Prussian naval officers.
