place of birth:  Dresden, Sachsen (Saxony)

Saxon general officer Georg von Gersdorff commanded an infantry brigade and division during the Great War. Gersdorff led his 63rd Infantry Brigade as the Germans made the initial push through Belgium and were then engaged during the First Battle of the Marne. It was here that Generalmajor von Gersdorff distinguished himself as a leader and was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. Later as commander of 58th Infantry Division in action against the French at Verdun, he was awarded the Kommandeurkreuz II. Klasse of the MSHO. While taking convalescent leave 1917, he suffered a heart attack and passed away. Three of Gersdorff's sons also served during the War, one of whom fell during battle. His brother Egon also served as a Saxon Generalleutnant.
