Bernhard
von Gélieu
(24.05.1864 - 14.10.1926)
place of birth: Berlin
Königreich
Preußen: Oberst
Prussian officer Bernhard von Gélieu was most noted for serving
as commandant of the Fortress at Liege, Belgium during the final months
of the war. Bernhard was the son of General of Infantry Bernhard von
Gelieu, the last of the Neuchâtel officers serving in the
Guard-Schützen-Battalion.
Young Bernhard was also with the
Guard-Schützen-Battalion during his pre-war service years, ultimately
receiving command of that battalion as Germany entered the war. During
the bulk of the war, however, he headed two different infantry
regiments, seeing action on both the western and eastern fronts. In the
summer of 1918, von Gelieu was transferred to Liege in order to serve
as the fortress commandant. Following the war, he was promoted to major
general and died in Berlin in 1926.
