German general officer Rudolf von Borries served during the Great War as 7. Armee Chief of Staff and later as a divisional commander. Borries grew up in Danzig as the son of a Prussian Oberst and left as a teenager in 1882 to join the Füsilier-Regiment Nr. 36 in Erfurt. Upon graduating from Prussian War College in 1894, he worked for the remaining 30 years of his pre-War career as a German general staff officer. In 1911, he was assigned as General von Prittwitz und Gaffron's Corps Chief of Staff at XVI. Armee-Korps headquarters in Metz.

Oberst von Borries remained in this assignment when General von Mudra took command of XVI. Armee-Korps in 1913, going into battle on the Western Front as Germany marched to War in August 1914. Borries proved to be both an excellent administrator and reliable advisor on military operations. In March 1915, he succeeded Gerhard Tappen as General von Heeringen's 7. Armee-Oberkommando Chief of Staff, a position he held for the following two years. Thereafter, Generalmajor von Borries was given command of the 13. Infanterie-Division which was still engaged in the trenches of Verdun. Borries soon demonstrated his outstanding command ability with his troops in action along the Chemin des Dames in northern France, winning the Pour le Merite in August of 1917. Following the Armistice, he remained in the Reichswehr as a brigade commander and retired from active duty in 1920.
