German General Walter von Bergmann served as von Kluck's Oberquartiermeister (Senior Quartermaster) as 1. Armee pushed into Belgium and swept towards the Marne. He later served as a field army Chief of Staff and a division commander. Bergmann launched his career as an infantry officer in 1882 and completed his studies at Prussian War College from 1891 to 1894. During the pre-War period, he worked for a total of nine years at General Staff headquarters and four years with the War Ministry.

With Germany's August 1914 invasion into Belgium and France, Oberst von Bergmann deployed with Kluck's 1. Armee-Oberkommando headquarters as its Oberquartiermeister, the officer in charge of the mobile army's logistical support. As Kluck's troops unsuccessfully attempted to encircle Paris, Bergmann's expertise was sought regarding overall operations, and he forcefully came out against any retreating maneuver. After a December 1914 promotion to Generalmajor, he briefly served Armee-Gruppe Lochow's Chief of Staff during fighting near Arras. He then returned to 1. Armee headquarters where General von Fabeck had recently replaced the disgraced Alexander von Kluck. The field army redeployed in September 1915 to Grodno, Belarus, where it reformed as 12. Armee-Oberkommando with Bergmann as General Fabeck's Chief of Staff. The field army was disbanded in October 1916, and its staff briefly served at the headquarters of the newly-reformed 8. Armee.

At the end of 1916, Bergmann was transferred to function as Chief of Staff at the newly established Military Administration Headquarters in Romania. He soon redeployed back to the Western Front and Vosges Mountains in February 1917 in order to take command of 113. Infanterie-Division. Bergmann was honored with the Pour le Merite for his leadership during Germany's 1918 Spring Offensive in the Somme area, and was later promoted to Generalleutnant. He also commanded Generalkommando z.b.V. Nr. 66 during the last few months of the War. Following the Armistice, he commanded 13. Infanterie-Division until October 1919. Bergmann was promoted to General der Infanterie in late 1920, after which he was placed in charge of Wehrkreis V in Stuttgart, as well as Gruppenkommando 1 in Berlin.
